I been at it for almost 20 years. in addition to what the Cuzzo said about Inkscape and GIMP, look into Vexels to streamline your design process with your tees and such. take their design templates and put your own flavor on it

Use Inkscape it's a clone of illustrator. It's also free. I switched from illustrator to that. Then GIMP is a clone of Photoshop. Also free!
